You can't help but be impressed with the author's purpose for walking the Camino. He had turned 70 years old and decided he was getting too comfortable in his semi-retired life. He needed to "shake things up" a bit, and once he heard about the Camino he really worked hard to get himself trained and mentally prepared for such an arduous task.This is the first Camino memoir I have read about the Portuguese coastal route and I was interested to get a feel for the route because I have already walked 220 miles on the Camino Frances, and I have a friend who wants me to walk with him from Porto to Santiago. The authors description of the route helped me to get a feel for this particular Camino.I had to smile when reading the authors final reflections on his Camino. Having injured himself on day 2, he could not help but be focused on his pain over the next week of waking, but once he achieved his goal, the whole experience pivoted to the deeper spiritual significance of what he had accomplished. Thank you for having the guts and drive to show us what we can accomplish fine set our minds to do it. I found this book to be a very enjoyable read and was sorry to come to the end of it. Having read countless books on people who have walked the Camino, this one did not disappoint. It was open, honest and very refreshing in the way John freely admits to taking short breaks from walking and choosing a bus. He also chose to use couriers to deliver his suitcase to next locations. Many authors having walked the Camino often seem to sneer a bit ( sorry, but they do) at those who choose to do so, almost making it seem that sheer misery is the only “true” Camino experience. I admire the way John did his. He was wise enough to consider his recent hip surgery and was not foolishly bravado by pushing his body in a careless manner. His easy, descriptive way of writing made me feel, taste, smell and see everything he experienced. I think this was a great book and an excellent way to pass some time during this pandemic.
